How the ONA HBCU Digital Media Fellowship Expanded My Skills, Network, and Perspective in Journalism and Tech
This September, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the HBCU Digital Media Fellowship at the 2024 Online News Association Conference (ONA24) in Atlanta. Selected from a highly competitive pool of over 100 applicants, I was honored to join five other talented students representing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in a transformative experience that combined mentorship, creativity, and innovation.
Learning, Creating, and Growing
At ONA24, we worked under the guidance of Michael Grant, founder of Get Current Studio, to develop a digital project showcasing emerging tech for online news. The hands-on training not only expanded my technical skills but also gave me a deeper understanding of how technology continues to shape journalism.
Beyond the project, the conference offered countless opportunities to network with trailblazers in journalism and tech. From dynamic workshops to one-on-one conversations, I left with invaluable insights and connections that will undoubtedly shape my future in digital media.
Exploring Atlanta and HBCU Pride
While in Atlanta, I also embraced the chance to visit some of the city’s iconic HBCUs—Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University. Walking their beautiful campuses reminded me of the rich legacy and impact of HBCUs in fostering excellence and community.
It was also my first time experiencing Atlanta, and the city did not disappoint! The culture, the energy, and the people made it a trip I’ll never forget.
Looking Ahead
The HBCU Digital Media Fellowship was more than just a professional opportunity—it was a celebration of Black excellence and innovation in journalism. As I continue my journey in media, I’m excited to apply the skills I gained, nurture the connections I made, and remain part of the ONA community through my one-year membership.
Atlanta showed me the power of collaboration and the importance of staying ahead in a fast-changing industry. I’m grateful for this experience and eager to see what’s next on this journey of storytelling and innovation.
Pro Tip: If you’re passionate about media and technology, I highly recommend exploring programs like the ONA HBCU Fellowship. It’s a game-changer!
